Leader 1-2-3
Leader 1-2-3 is a specially-designed program to aid principals, vice-principals, and other administrative personnel in the improvement of instructional leadership skills. This unique experience focuses on the planning, developing, implementing and measuring skills required to support quality learning in the school. The program is sponsored and developed by the National Association of Secondary School Principals.
This NASSP program consists of three phases.
Phase 1: Preparation
Phase 1 of Leader 1-2-3 is preparation. It requires the completion of tasks which provide the foundation for Phases 2 and 3. A self-assessment questionnaire is completed by the participant and others who observe the participant in the role of instructional leader. Phase 1 also includes the identification of critical incidents, goals and objectives, and the formulation of a specific leadership project prior to participation in the seminar program.
Phase 2: Seminar
The second phase of the program is an intensive 3-day + 1-evening seminar held on a Sunday evening-Wednesday format. During the seminar, participants will have many opportunities to observe and practice effective behaviours for instructional leadership. Performance coaches will assist participants in both Phase 2 and Phase 3 and there are ample opportunities for self-appraisal and peer coaching. Two days of the seminar will involve simulations; the third day focuses on the individual participants and their home school situations.
Phase 3: Project at the work site
Phase 3 is the performance payoff. During Phase 3, the participant carries out a project to improve instructional leadership in his or her own school. Each participant will have received consultation from a coach and the participants during the seminar. A follow-up seminar to share outcomes and to support, coach, and challenge each other, signalling the beginning of goal setting and planning for future personal growth and development as an instructional leader.
Leader 1-2-3 will be offered during the winter of 2001 if numbers warrant.
